Who is Datacentience?

Our senior executives command blue chip management experience at the highest level. They set up Datacentience for the freedom that a specialist business would give them to rethink some of the assumptions that have shaped the growth of datacenters.

Greg Melgaard – Our chairman and an alumnus of McKinsey in Australia and the US. Among other things Greg is chairman of Semper Holdings and MD of Palmaris Capital plc, with extensive interests in Europe and Australia.

Rob Mills – Chief executive, and a Cambridge economist by training, he was managing director at Fisons plc and at building management system businesses Trend and Novar, as well as chairman of MK Electric and fire systems specialist Gent.

Thom Brouillard – Chief technical officer and an expert on cooling, having worked in Europe since 1983 in leading engineering management roles for Liebert, Emerson and APC respectively. In 2004 he began to pioneer close coupled cooling designs for high density applications, an approach that is close to the heart of Datacentience.

High density (HD) blade servers sit at the heart of the modern datacenter. They offer vastly increased computer power, with a smaller physical footprint. We don’t make them. They are mounted in rack systems. We don’t make those either.

We focus on the supporting technology: the things that make the servers work, and keep on working, like power and close coupled cooling. By looking harder at these often ill-considered areas we’re aligning datacenter design with real business needs: with the need for flexibility in an uncertain age; with economic pressures on space utilization and power consumption; with the social pressure to reduce your carbon footprint.

It’s sometimes said that HD in the datacenter is difficult, bringing new problems around cooling and power draw. We set up Datacentience because we think the opposite is true: our products make HD easy.

We start by focusing on the rack, not on the room. By addressing cooling and power management at rack level, we can transform the flexibility of HD installations (for instance making retrofit feasible) and lower the overall cost of the datacenter. We can also dramatically reduce power usage in lower density datacenters through our advanced cooling technology.
