Transporting Yuasa Batteries, you need to read this

We often get asked for Transportation information on CSB, Yuasa and Victron batteries. Shown below is the latest information from Yuasa:

TRANSPORTATION OF YUASA BATTERIES (TYPES NP, NPH, NPC, NPL, NPW, RE, REL, SW, SWL, UXL, PL, ENDURANCE, YUCEL, TEV) BY AIR, SEA, RAIL OR ROAD

All the above Yuasa battery types can withstand temperatures up to 55ºC, they all contain sulphuric acid which is held within Absorbent Glass Matt (AGM) material. The AGM material immobilises the electrolyte, hence no spillage can occur even if the case is ruptured.

1. AIR TRANSPORT

Under IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, the subject batteries are classified as:

‘Batteries, wet, non-spillable, electric storage’

• Class 8
• Packaging Group III
• UN No. 2800 Batteries
• Packaging instruction 872
• Special provision A67 (Non-hazardous for passenger or cargo aircraft transportation)

2. TRANSPORT BY SEA

Under the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) code, the subject batteries are classified as:

‘Batteries, wet, non-spillable, electric storage’

• UN No. 2800
• Class 8
• Stowage and segregation category A
• Emergency Schedule F-A-S-B
• Excepted quantity E0
• Not restricted as per SP238-2

3. TRANSPORT BY RAIL

‘Batteries, wet, non-spillable, electric storage’

• UN No. 2800
• Class 8
• Exempt from RID requirements

4. TRANSPORT BY ROAD

‘Batteries, wet, non-spillable, electric storage’

• UN No. 2800
• Class 8
• Exempt from ADR requirements

5. PACKAGINGGENERAL
These batteries can be shipped in any quantity by air, rail, road and sea. They are exempt from any special packing requirement other than to ensure that the battery terminals are protected from short circuit. TREM cards are not required.

The normal packaging provided is suitable in this respect for batteries not secured in equipment. If in equipment, the batteries must be securely fastened in the battery compartment of the equipment.
