What is a voltage regulator?
A voltage regulator or controller is a part of a power supply unit which ensures a steady and consistent voltage within a circuit by taking an input voltage and converting this into a fixed output voltage. They are designed to protect against voltage fluctuations to prevent damage occurring and ensure consistent performance.
What is an automatic voltage regulator?
An automatic voltage regulator, or AVR, is also referred to as a voltage regulator. They are the same thing as all voltage regulators are automatic.
What is the difference between a linear and a switching voltage regulator?
Linear regulators provide a simple voltage regulation solution for less complex situations, or when a lightweight solution is needed. However, switching regulators are more complex to design for and implement but provide greater efficiencies when used correctly. Linear regulators have been around for many years, whereas switching regulators have been in use since the 1990s.
Switching regulators are able to generate output voltages that are higher than the input voltage or of opposite polarity, unlike linear regulators, which step down the input voltage to a specific DC voltage. Saying this, the two can be used in conjunction to create a stable power output system that meets the needs of modern power management solutions.
