SLA batteries will typically last between 3 and 5 years, compared to lithium-ion which generally have a longer life expectancy. However, when looking for replacement UPS batteries, it is important to consider that despite lasting for a short amount of time, SLA batteries are considered more cost-effective an option.

- UPS indicates a battery issue – Built-in indicators such as audible alarms or lights alert you of a problem
- The UPS battery is leaking or swollen – Care should be taken when handling a leaking battery, use gloves and apply baking soda to neutralize any spilled acid

Can a UPS work without a battery?

Can you replace a UPS battery while the UPS is plugged in?
It is recommended that to replace a UPS battery safely, the UPS should be turned off and unplugged.
Some UPS models have a ‘hot swap’ feature which allows certain components to be replaced while the system is still in operation. If your UPS isn’t equipped with this feature it needs to be shut down and disconnected from the electrical circuit so avoid any damage to the equipment.
Once a new battery has been installed, the UPS can be turned back on to begin recharging the battery.
